“Mugairyu is taught with zen principles at its roots, and it is my sincere, heartfelt hope that your study and understanding

of zen will guide your practice of this art of swordsmanship.”

— Tsuji Gettan

Iaido is a Japanese martial art that centers around the swift drawing of the sword and the ability to respond effectively to sudden attacks. The art comprises four main components: smoothly drawing the sword from its scabbard (or saya), executing strikes or cuts on opponents, shaking blood from the blade, and returning the sword to its scabbard.

The essence of Iaido lies in the psychological state of being present (居), always prepared for immediate action. The art emphasizes both mental readiness and the skillful execution of drawing and responding to attacks swiftly (合).

Within Iaido, we proudly embrace Mugai Ryu—a traditional style of Japanese swordsmanship crafted by Tsuji Gettan in 1693. Mugai Ryu prioritizes practical, close-quarters techniques for drawing and cutting, whether facing a single adversary or multiple opponents.

Gettan, a swordsman and Zen practitioner, believed that sword and Zen training were interconnected. His manuscript, "Mugairyu Swordsmanship," delves into this philosophy, emphasizing the integration of Zen meditation and sword practice. He shared this profound knowledge only with those who embraced Zen meditation.

Training in Mugai Ryu commences with the 20 fundamental seated and standing kata (forms), gradually progressing to advanced kata and partner practice with both long and short swords. Mugai Ryu practitioners also engage in tameshigiri, where live blades are used to cut targets.

Mushinkan Kokyo's Iaido program is affiliated with Suimokai—an esteemed organization in Japan dedicated to preserving various martial arts, including Mugai Ryu. The organization is led by Niina Toyoaki Gyokudo, the soke (headmaster) of Meishi-ha Mugairyu Iaihyodo.
